Kenya 2025

Because people keep asking me what a day like this looks like for me, I'll try to tell you about it in writing today 😉 We still have a time difference of two hours, which we are two hours ahead of you in Central Europe.

I typically get up between 8:00 and 10:00 in the morning and then stay in bed for a few minutes. I need these minutes to fully arrive here and now. If I have the luxury of this, I make the most of it.

After brushing my teeth, I say hello to the cat and then open all the windows. Mombasa is really beautiful, and I feel extremely comfortable here, but the heat is next level. The fans run almost 24/7.

Then it's time to prepare and follow up on 5 out of 7 days. The online lessons are coming up and with them a variety of groups, needs and language levels. Whether it's the children or my adult students. I often hold lessons between these phases and then continue afterwards.

Lunch and dinner are of course a must. We usually have lunch between 13:00 - 15:00 and then dinner around 21:30. When I have time off, we often enjoy a meal out, whether on the beach or in the mall. In the meantime, we've also found our favourite places that we go to again and again. Oh yes, and in the morning, we usually have a freshly mixed fruit juice that my partner prepares for both of us.

We cook separately a lot, but we now have such a large kitchen that we can cook together and then enjoy our meals together. While everything is vegetarian for me, my partner loves his meat and his ugali. Ugali is quite similar to polenta, but without any spices. Every now and then we have pasta for both of us, which one of us then cooks for both of us. I cook a lot here with potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber and rice. Now that we have a fridge - we didn't really have one in Kisumu - we also have products such as yoghurt, salad and butter. And I have found a bakery where the bread is just as good as at home. So, we're making all kinds of upgrades 😉

On some working days, you can take a short walk to the sea or pick up some fresh produce at the market. Taking the cat for a walk is also perfectly acceptable.

On my days off, we like to enjoy the sea or go on organisational trips where we look around for missing household items. As we don't have a car, we travel a lot in UBERs and tuk-tuks, which are really cheap here, especially when your partner gets 50% off every journey.

As I mentioned before, it's so hot here that I shower at least twice a day because even when I'm hoovering, sweat runs down my face. Well and then it's off to bed between 23:00 - 00:30. I'll try to take you with me on a day with a video in the near future. I also invite you to stay active here, because we're currently planning something bigger that I'm really looking forward to. But until then, you can make do with my blog articles. Well, I'd like to add a bit more variety to these soon too. But some things can still grow.
