The journey to the elephants - Part 3

Kenya 2024

Thorsten described Carina before we left another way we should take back, because one thing was clear, the way we took here, we could not take back.

Arriving at the car, we quickly noticed that we had a fairly flat tire. We were lucky, because in the facility where our car was, there was also a small workshop that could supply us first. Then the return journey finally started, which was more than necessary, because it was already 16:30 and the sun would have disappeared at 19:00. We knew this path would not be easier either, but it was the absolute best and only option for us.
We just started with Carina and my friend getting out of the car and licking me through a 500-metre-long track and continuing to drive. At some point we exchanged two women and Carina took over the wheel. Soon the road got better and we could all continue in the car together. We were rewarded no more than 200 meters away with an elephant herd marching near the street.

The road was still hollow and everything other than good, however we had no more meat tracks. We knew there was going to be a very critical point where nobody was sure we'd get through. Shortly before this hole, we were stopped by drunk Kenyan. They meant to us that we would never get through the hole and should drive around on a forest road. My friend got the directions and we set out. Shortly thereafter, we were stopped by a ranger. He told us we shouldn't go here. When we told him we were from the Mara Elephant Project, he called and got confirmed. 500/= and a little negotiation later, the Ranger drove ahead with a Boda Boda and we tucked behind.  The circumference was simply a field path around the road and shortly after the mudhole, we were already on the road again. As we drove along the road, we saw a truck stuck in this mudhole! How lucky we were.

After the field trip I took the wheel again and drove for two hours in the dawn on typical African streets finally to the main road, which was asphalted. When the sun went down, I had one of the most beautiful sunsets in the mirror and thought to myself how lucky I am to be able to experience all this here!

Arriving on the main road, I realized how exhausted and finished I was and my friend took over the wheel. At that time it was already stockfinster and we drove to the nearest town, where we stayed in a hotel and ate.

The next day we drove home via Kericho and were simply grateful that everything went so well and smoothly. In the end, it was another unforgettable experience that I would not want to miss. The car had two screws in the tire, a broken shockbar, was full of mess inside and outside and down there it was pretty damaged. But for all this we didn't pay 20€ and then we had a car that we did not recognize. This weekend we worked absolutely together as a team and it was even harder to get Carina to the airport on Wednesday and say goodbye, but it's part of our lives. The memories remain forever!
